What is the difference between the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Prime?
A strong argument could be made that Toyota is more well-known for its hybrid technology than any other automaker in the industry. As soon as the Prius was shown to be popular with customers, the manufacturer was quick to add its hybrid technology to more platforms each year. Considering the popularity of the Toyota RAV4 crossover SUV, it only made sense for a hybrid version of that vehicle to hit the market. In the 2021 model year, that hybrid crossover family is growing again. So, what is the difference between the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the Toyota RAV4 Prime? Both will offer plenty of interior space and everything that has made the RAV4 popular in addition to excellent fuel economy. Let’s see how these vehicles approach that kind of efficiency.

Hybrid Versus Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
Both the RAV4 Hybrid and the RAV4 Prime utilize electric motors in conjunction with a gasoline-powered engine to move. Where the all-new 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime diverges from the rest of the automaker’s lineup is that it can recharge its onboard battery packs by literally plugging it into an outlet or through the normal course of driving – like regenerative braking. The RAV4 Hybrid will only recharge its batteries through regular driving behaviors.

Can either RAV4 model travel without using gasoline?
While Toyota wanted to change the game in the hybrid market, they didn’t need to reinvent the wheel when it came to developing the RAV4 Prime. Both electrified versions of the RAV4 will be able to travel without engaging the gasoline engine. However, because of the updated technology used by the 2021 RAV4 Prime, it will be able to travel farther than the hybrid version. Owners of the 2021 RAV4 Prime will be able to travel up to 42 miles without using a single drop of gas. The RAV4 Hybrid will also be able to do this, just not for as many miles.
