Toyota Set to Make Hybrid RAV4

The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid will debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show

With the success of the Prius, Toyota has become the go-to brand for successful hybrid vehicles. Toyota plans to show off the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid at the 2015 New York Auto Show on April 2. The RAV4 Hybrid release will catapult the RAV4 brand to a new level. With its release, Toyota is betting that eco-conscious families will flock to the RAV4 in favor of its anticipated fuel economy and lighter dent in the environment. The current RAV4 competes in sales with the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.

Toyota previously had offered a hybrid version of the Highlander model, but it is no longer part of their lineup. There have been reports that Toyota has been looking into making an all-hybrid RAV4 for a few years, but information has not surfaced until now.

The 2016 RAV4 is expected to use a similar powertrain as the Lexus NX 300h, though exact numbers have not been made available yet. It could also use a similar powertrain to one of the cars in the Prius family. Any other information has been pretty closely guarded by Toyota. From the photo above, released by Toyota, the first noticeable difference is the taillights. We must wait until the New York Auto Show to see what else has changed.

Despite the success of cars like the 2015 Toyota Prius in Decatur AL, Toyota does not have a line of hybrid vehicles that can transport a large family. The overall versatility of the RAV4 will be an asset to its ability to compete in the hybrid world. With the popularity of crossover sport utility vehicles, you could hedge bets the RAV Hybrid will sell quite well.

Starting with this release of the RAV4, Toyota has a lofty goal of offering a hybrid version of every vehicle in its lineup by the year 2020.
