A new Corolla-based crossover SUV could be in our future

Is Toyota adding a Corolla crossover SUV to the lineup?

A brief glance at the new crossover SUV lineup available at Toyota of Decatur will reveal some of the industry’s most capable and popular models. However, it appears that our manufacturing partner is poised to add another option to the roster. So, is Toyota adding a Corolla crossover SUV to the lineup? An article appearing on one of our favorite automotive news websites, Autoblog, on July 9 gives us hope that this could be true. The Toyota Corolla Cross is already going on sale in foreign markets and the automaker’s global newsroom has some preliminary information. In short, the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross will be classified in the same corner of the industry as the Toyota C-HR but with a more traditional exterior appearance. Let’s take a look at what else we know at this point.

Will this be the first Corolla crossover SUV ever?

The Corolla is already the best-selling model in automotive history. An eventual Corolla-themed crossover SUV isn’t the automaker’s first such mashup. Author Jonathon Ramsey, was quick to point out that Toyota produce the Corolla All-Trac in the late 1980s until the early 1990s. According the information available on the Toyota Global Newsroom, the Corolla Cross will share the same TNGA chassis platform as the C-HR, and it will offer very similar interior passenger and cargo dimensions.

Performance Specs

As is the case with existing versions of the Corolla (sedan and hatchback) the potentially new crossover SUV version will have a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine under the hood that will be attached to a Toyota continuously variable transmission. Early output estimates say that the Corolla Cross will make about 140 horsepower – also in line with what the base Corolla sedan makes. There is also talk of a hybrid version. While this is an option for buyers in Thailand, we don’t know if it will make it to American buyers, at least right away.
